Development Status
J79 is a single-rotor axial-flow afterburning turbojet engine developed by General Electric for the US Air Force. Development began in 1952, the first test was carried out in June 1954, the 150h finalization test was passed in August 1956, and it was delivered to the Air Force in 1958 to power the F-4 Phantom fighter.
The J79 engine is the first engine of GE to use existing technology, verified components and advanced technical means to ensure the progress of the project. In 1955, the J79 engine completed its first flight in New York. The J79 engine was installed in the bomb bay of the B-45 Tornado bomber powered by the J47 engine. During the test, the engine was dropped from the bomb bay and exposed to the airflow, and then the four J47 engines were stopped, and the J79 engine powered the B-45.
The J79 engine was first installed on the XF4D aircraft, and later set a world record of 27,812 meters in flight altitude and a record of 2,253 kilometers per hour in flight speed when it was installed on the F-104. Later, the J79 engine was selected by the F-4 Mirage fighter. At the time of selection, the J79 engine was the most advanced turbojet engine. So far, more than 2,500 engines are still in use and are scheduled to continue to serve until 2020.
The J79 selected the most advanced design parameters at the time, such as the turbine inlet temperature of 930°C, the afterburner temperature of 1800°C, and the compressor pressure ratio higher than 12. In addition, the J79 was the first in the world to use the compressor stator adjustment technology to improve the engine's aerodynamic performance. In addition, a double-body blade structure was used to eliminate blade resonance. At the same time, the load-bearing parts and shafts of the main casings and sealing devices all adopt a conical structure with good rigidity and light weight.
